The ozone molecule, O₃, is formed by combining an oxygen molecule, O2, with a free oxygen atom, O. Free atoms, and consequently the ozone molecule, are the result of the dissociation of oxygen molecules when these are subjected to a strong discharge of energy.

Thanks to its high oxidising power, ozone is capable of the following:
